Tehama County

Tehama County MapPacific Sun Olive Oil is a product of Tehama County, an agriculturally rich and diverse region of Northern California. Tehama County sits at the head of California's Central Valley and is traversed by the Sacramento River. This provides it with both high quality soils majestic valley and mountain views. Predominant among Tehama County's agricultural products are walnuts, beef, dried plums, timber, dairy products, almonds, and olives.

Because of its Mediterranean climate, Tehama County is ideally suited for growing olives. Summer temperatures usually exceed 100º Fahrenheit while winter temperatures hover around 40-50º. Although uncommon, snow has been known to fall in Tehama County and snow-covered olive trees, like the one pictured here are a beautiful sight.

Snow Covered Ascolana Olive Tree

Olive trees were introduced to Tehama County in the late 1800's and early 1900's. There were over 5500 productive acres of olives in Tehama County in 2001. A large majority of this acreage was harvested for the olive canning industry. The remainder of this acreage was harvested for olive oil production and sold to producers throughout the state, including many in prestigious Napa and Sonoma Counties.

The snow-covered tree pictured above is over seventy years old and is of the Mission variety.

Two primary varieties of olives were planted in Tehama County in the early 1900s, the Mission variety and the Sevillano variety. Mission trees bear small fruit with very high oil content, while the Sevillanos produce the largest of all table olives but one of the lowest producing oil fruits. In addition to these varieties, Tehama County also features many acres of Manzanillo and Ascolana olives, both of which are good oil producing olive varieties.
